All Saints Academy – We Remember
Students at All Saints Academy came together in a powerful service of remembrance on Friday 11th November.
Members of the public joined our Act of Remembrance on a crisp autumn morning, passing a display of ceramic poppies created by students in response to the installation at the Tower of London.
The start of the service was marked by readings of the famous Laurence Binyon poem “For the Fallen” by Year 7 Head Girl, Charlotte Preston, and John McRae’s “In Flanders Field” by Sixth Form Head Girl, Shannon Stack.
Veteran Salvation Army bugler Raymond Jackson, who will be 80 on his next birthday, played The Last Post and the start of the two minute silence was marked by Sixth Form student Shaweer Noorah wearing full World War 1 uniform blowing an authentic 1917 soldier’s whistle.
All members of the Academy family were silent as wreaths were laid for each year group, for the staff and for our governors. The silence was broken by a whistle and Reveille.
Concluding our service, students left to the strains of Elgar’s Nimrod. A fitting end to a solemn and poignant occasion. Our thanks to all who marked this Act of Remembrance with us.

Geography A-level Trip to Dorset
On the 15th April amid a very heavy spring downpour, four A-level students and their teachers set off for a weekend of Geography fieldwork in Dorset. Our hearts sank as we travelled south and the rain continued, but as we arrived at the PGL centre at Osmington Bay, the sky finally cleared and the sun came out. Smiles on faces, we spent the afternoon team building, tackling the fear of the giant swing and the fast paced excitement of aeroball before chilling out in the activity zone that evening over a few games of table tennis and far too many sweets!
The next day we got down to the Geography fieldwork section of the weekend, visiting four different locations along the UNESCO Heritage Jurassic Coast. We tried our hand at beach profiling and land use mapping before tucking into a lunch of fish and chips in Lyme Regis. In the afternoon, we visited a range of different beaches to examine the management put in place to protect this stunning coastline. We were able to collect lots of information and data to apply in our unit 2 exam and have developed a strong understanding of why different parts of the coast are managed in different ways.
On our last day, we visited the famous Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, where we were able to see and discuss the formation of a range of coastal features. Although we had a tough walk over the cliffs, the views were amazing and we all caught a little sun along the way. Thanks to Miss Room and Mr Walbank for their hard work and giving up their weekend.

School Games 2015
The School Games is a National School Sport Competition programme designed to motivate and promote physical activity to all young people in years 1 to 13 to get involved in a variety of ways regardless of their abilities.
Kade Gaskell is the ‘School Games Organiser’ based at All Saints and will support the coordination of the School Games available to young people within Dunstable and Houghton Regis. PE teachers in schools across Houghton Regis and Dunstable will have the opportunity to bring students to a range of School Games activities at a local level which then lead on to the county Winter and Summer School Games.

Sport, Health and Leisure Visit to the University of Bedfordshire

I was very lucky to get the opportunity to go to the University trip as a gifted and talented student in physical education. It was an amazing trip which opened many doors in my head for my future in sport. It made me realise how much sport can offer to an individual and how many opportunities there are, it doesn’t matter how old nor what gender. I looked at it from all different angles of the different topics in sport; looking at the heart, Body composition, Testing athletes, Environmental sport testing, and testing cells. I found doing sport science really interesting as we were in the lab. It all looked very good and it did make me think of what I wanted to go into in sport. I would love to go into sport in the future and I’ve taken GCSE PE so the opportunity is already opened I’m on the right track to getting to where I want to be. I will most probably take P.E at A level. I also toured the University and saw the rooms and the library, and also got told about the financial side of university as in living costs, accommodation, the course fees and more. We went into a learning room and a very successful man told us about his journey and adventures he has been on throughout his life and we also did a bit of practical. It helped us improve our teamwork and thinking skills. At the beginning we played a few games of dodge ball with the captain of the dodge ball team and he told us how he got to where he is now. Overall I really enjoyed my day and I learnt a lot from it.

The trip to the University of Bedfordshire was really interesting and entertaining throughout the whole day. They were all so nice to us and introduced us to everything they had to offer for the students who attend there. We played dodgeball with the captain on the dodgeball team. Then they showed us round their sports science labs, and introduced us to all of the equipment that they use and all the technology that has helped things like improve football. They have an environmental chamber which was able to change the temperature and humidity of the room. We were told how they perform experiments on muscles and how the body reacts to different things. We then listened to a man who has done many things like travel across Iceland. He told us about his experience and then took us to do a practical. We were split into two teams and had to get from one side to the other using equipment. This needed team work and we all performed this well. Everyone at the University was welcoming and gave us all the information we needed. It was a good day out and I would like to do more things like that.

RAF Band at All Saints
It’s not every day that an academy has a visit from the Central Band of the RAF but All Saints were delighted to host a concert on Friday 10 January, starting the Band’s new season of school visits together with the RAF Careers Service.
The Band performed a fun programme in front of the Councillors John Chatterley and Peter Williams (Town Mayors of Dunstable and Houghton Regis) and a hall full of students. The main hall was flooded with the sounds of military precision and professionalism as arrangements of songs from the charts, well-known tunes and even a medley of Nintendo themes were played by the thirty-two member Band, directed by Warrant Officer Dave Richards.
There were opportunities for audience participation as students yelled pop choruses as the Band played and joined the percussion section for a rendition of
Tea for Two with the Principal, Tom Waterworth, conducting.
WO Richards promised an entertaining programme and it was that and much more. We wish the Band well with its tour around the UK and overseas in the coming months and thank them very much for visiting All Saints.

British Legion Poppy Appeal
The traditional sale of poppies took place in late October and November leading to Armistice Day on Friday 11th and Remembrance Sunday on 12th November.
The VI form also raised £65.43 with a cake sale to add to the Poppy Appeal. Student cadets were well-involved at ceremonies in both Dunstable and Houghton Regis.
Many student families have links with the armed services and it is a poignant time of year for us all in which to reflect on the generosity of those who have given much in the search for peace and justice.
